Houston homes are big, bright, and built fast. What separates a house that feels custom from one that feels like a builder catalog is rarely square footage — it is the quality of the millwork, the restraint of the palette, and how carefully the lighting is planned. After years designing homes across Houston, Katy, Memorial, and The Woodlands, these are the decisions that consistently change how a home lives.
The most common mistake in a new Houston build is decorating around problems instead of fixing them. Before a single sofa is specified, we look at ceiling heights, window placement, sightlines from the entry, and how the kitchen opens to the living area. Moving a cased opening or widening a hallway costs far less at the framing stage than compensating for it with furniture for the next twenty years.
Houston light is strong and slightly yellow, and it will pull cool grays toward green. A palette built on soft white, greige, stone, and warm taupe reads calm year-round and photographs beautifully. Save the personality for texture — plaster walls, boucle, linen, aged bronze, unlacquered brass, and honed rather than polished stone.
Recessed cans alone flatten a room. Every space we design gets ambient light on dimmers, task light where people actually work, and one sculptural fixture that gives the room a center of gravity. In Katy's high-ceiling great rooms, an oversized plaster or linen pendant does more for scale than any piece of art.
Houston and Katy families live outside for most of the year. Continuous flooring across the threshold, matching ceiling treatments, weather-rated upholstery, and a covered patio with real lighting turn a slab into a second living room. It is one of the highest-return moves in a Texas remodel.
A full-service interior design project in the Houston area typically runs eight to twelve weeks for design and specification, followed by procurement and installation that depend on lead times. Custom upholstery and imported stone move slowly. Building that reality into the schedule at the start is the difference between an exciting project and a stressful one.
Look for a portfolio with a consistent point of view rather than one that chases every trend, ask how the firm handles procurement and installation, and confirm who will be on site during construction. The right designer should be able to explain the reason behind every finish in your home.
